The Carvell Coventry Bears ran out comfortable winners against 3rd in the table Bedford Tigers on Saturday at Old Coventrians RFC.
The Bears started brightly and after 3 minutes Scrum Half Scott Clendenning-Fenton had cheekily kicked through and collected his own kick to score Bedford fought back and took the lead for the only time in the match with a try by centre Zander Pedan.
Winger Tanaka Chaunokara returning to first team duty scored the first of his 4 tries of the afternoon.
Dean Thompson from full back who is back to his best form scored again for the Bears before Tigers Stand off Dan Sharp and another conversion from Ashton brought the score to 14-12 midway through the first half. This was as close as Bedford were going to get all afternoon as some poor defending saw the Bears begin to pull away.
Graham Healey from Stand Off added another try for Coventry, converting his own effort. A try by the Tigers Chris Bygraves flattered to deceive but further tries by hooker Alex Brown and Tanaka Chaunokara saw the home side leading 30 points to 16 at half time.
In the second half the Bears carried on where they had left off with another Chaunokara effort.
Bedford did manage to trouble the scorer once more when Full Back Graham Magill went in on Bedford’s behalf.
From then on the Bears started to run riot with tries by Second row Lee Ashford, Chaunokara, coach and prop Ty Watson, Dean Thompson and winger Ben Powis scoring a brace.

Speaking after the game Coach Watson commented that overall he was pleased with the effort of his team. “We had a few players playing out of position today and the return to first team duty for young Tanaka Chaunokara was a bonus. Lee Ashford was immense today. It took us to the second half to really get going but then I thought we were really starting to play in our old style.”
