Coventry Bears juniors were in action over the weekend when they hosted Nottingham Outlaws at Old Coventrians.
First up was the under 11’s Coventry and Nottingham actually combined their teams to play against a strong Northampton unit. This was always going to be a tough ask for the young squad with lots of new faces in the team but they played really well together and showed that the junior section will be strong for a few years to come. Jevon Hinds took control weaving his way to the try line and passing at the right moments. Emma Millard impressed with some excellent covering tackles and her work in attack was great to see Captain of the womens team Debbie Drake saw potential in Emma and hopefully you will see her playing in the womens side in a few years time. Unfortunately the u11’s lost but not without fight.
Then came the u14’s without a win this season the lads were looking for a good game and were looking to test themselves. Unfortantly Nottingham only brought 6 players due to injuries and some away on holiday. But the young Bears were not undaunted and were willing to lend players across to the Outlaws. The Bears started strongly with Julian Ayriss opening their account with a great run down the middle of the pitch Corey Radford converting. Then it was the turn of Joe Foreman who just didn’t stop till he got over the try line, such was his determination to score. Then it was turn of Isaac Harding a veteran of the Bears in his second season. Then the Bears started playing in full flow and were passing the ball from side to side until they mistook a Nottingham player for their own and passed him the ball then it a quick scamble to get back into defence. The game carried on like this for the next half hour with the Bears in total control and showing some of the skills that they have learnt from the last few weeks. Harry Marks scoring a hat-trick in only his third game of league. At the end it was Nottingham who had the last shout scoring 2 quick try’s when the Bears were starting to run out of steam. Subway junior’s man of the match went to Joe Foreman for his excellent skill in attack and to Lewis Mackensie who is the youngest of the team and the smallest showed his metal by running the ball in time and time again.
