Carvell Coventry Bears were in fine form on the hottest day of the year so far. Newly promoted Bedford Tigers fresh from posting 100 points against Leicester Phoenix last week, were given a reality check when faced by last seasons Midland Premier Champions.
They held out for 15 minutes before substitute Aaron Jarvis crashed through to score under the posts. 5 minutes later prop Lee Ashford repeated the trick as he too scored close to the posts. When skipper and hooker Alex Brown scored for the Bears it was all but over for the Tigers. Lee Ashford added his second try for the Bears on the half hour mark.
Winger Ben Powis silenced the crowd which had been trying to rile him when he forced his way over in the corner despite the attention of 3 Bedford Players.
Half Time
Bedford Tigers 0 Carvell Coventry Bears 28.
Bedford finally troubled the scorer just after the break but almost immediately Powis scored another try in the left hand corner.
The Bears started to throw the ball around and midway through the second half Powis broke through and the ball was whipped across the field for the Bears other wingman Tom Shaw to finish off the best try of the afternoon.
Tony Wildsmith in the centres scored the Bears last try of the afternoon, but, credit to the Tigers they did have the last word scoring their second try.
Final Score
Bedford Tigers 12 Carvell Coventry Bears 40
Speaking after the game coach Ty Watson commented
“This was one of the Bears best performances since I have been in charge, I could not find fault with any player today they were all immense. Whilst the Bedford coach nominated Graham Healey as the J& S Landscapes man of the match I thought perhaps Aaron Jarvis or Tim Stevens ran him very close.
Bedford are a good team and they will win more games than they lose but today we were outstanding”
