The Carvell Coventry Bears have today announced that local hero Alex Brown will lead their First Grade Team for Season 2008.

Brown started playing rugby league at Coventry University like many other current Bears players including, Alan Robinson, Graham Healey, Peter Parker, Clem Muchiti and more. He went out to not only captain Coventry University but also lead the Midlands Student team. This led to Brown being capped 12 times by England Students and once for Great Britain Students.

Alex Browns playing career is as follows:

  • Coventry University 1999 – 2001
  • Coventry Bears in 2002
  • Part of National 3 winning side in 2004
  • Played for Townsville Brothers RL Club, Australia, feeder club of NQ Cowboys
  • Coventry Bears 2006 – present

Representative Honours:

  • Midlands Students (Captain)
  • England Students (12 caps)
  • GB Students v BARLA
  • Selected for England Lionhearts to play Malta and Army in 2007 but unable to play due to an injury
  • Current member of England Lionhearts Training squad
  • 2007 Midlands Premier dream team

Head Coach Ty Watson said “_Alex Brown was a logical choice for the position, a natural leader with a huge heart, great work rate, inspiring defence and all round good guy.

“Being involved with the club and it’s successes over the last few years has been a great experience and to be named captain being a local lad is a great honour!_” beamed Brown when asked about his appointment.

Scott Clendenning – Fenton has been appointed Vice Captain for the upcoming season and will no doubt provide with Brown a solid leadership platform.
