Coventry Bears are pleased to announce that Bears Founder and Ireland International Alan Robinson has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Bears.
Ty Watson has moved on to local rivals Leicester Phoenix. Bears Chairman Ron Banks commented: “Ty informed us that for personal reasons he wanted to resign from the Bears. He lives in Leicester and with business commitments the travel to Coventry for training and games was becoming too difficult. We would like to thank Ty for all he has done for the Bears. He has been a great player and has blossomed into a first class Coach. Ty’s move to the Phoenix will revitalise one of the Midlands older clubs and will, we hope, mean that the old Bears/Phoenix rivalry will once again see some great games between the two clubs. This in itself will be good for the game of Rugby League.
Ty goes with all our best wishes.
We are fortunate to have one of the most experienced Rugby League players in the Midlands at the Bears in Alan Robinson. Alan has decided to bring the curtain down on a career that has seen him win International recognition at every level.
From first playing Rugby League at Coventry University he has represented the Great Britain Students as Captain and played professionally with Limoux in France. He has also played for the Irish Wolfhounds A Team and most recently been capped for the full International team helping the Irish qualify for the recent World Cup in Australia.
Thankfully, Alan readily agreed to become our new Coach. His experience will prove to be a major asset for the club. It’s ironic that as Founder and First Coach of the Bears the wheel has now turned full circle.
I am confident that under Alan the Coventry Bears will continue to prosper and grow.”
