Sunday saw the first of the Carvell Coventry Bears ladies games against the armed forces and they started off in fine style with a convincing 46 points to 14 win against the RAF.
This was a hard fought out game with the weather conditions playing their part throughout the game with extremely high winds gusting across the pitch.
The ladies were also without Captain Debbie Drake, Jo Hart and Lizzie Holbourn who were all away on England Students duty. Stacey Tolley took on the role of captain for this game and she certainly delivered the goods. Stacey lead from the front with some hard hitting runs and some excellent tackles in defence.
The game also marked the debut of new girl Rhiannon Watkins who really impressed on her first outing with 2 tries and Rhiannon looks like being a contender for most tries in the season. Becky Morgan controlled the game well in attack and made some good line breaks whenever the chance arose.
The RAF played well at times but the weather conditions really upset their flow causing them to knock the ball on at the crucial moments in the game.
The hungry Bears were eager for more tries and jumped on the ball at any time they could and captilised on the RAF’s mistakes.
Coach Michelle Umaga was pleased with her troops, “They played really well and with some of the more experienced players missing the girls went about the game in a positive manner and really showed that we have a team that is strong in depth this year with no weak links”.
