Mike Whetstone has lost his batle against cancer.
Mike played for the Bears until his illness. He was also a player for our sister club Old Coventrians RFC who will be dedicating next weeks game to Mikes memory.
On behalf of everyone at Coventry Bears I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mikes family.
The funeral arrangements are Memorial Service in the King Henry VIII School Hall on Wednesday 30th September at 1.30pm and then at the Old Coventrians RFC clubhouse in Tile Hill Lane.
Many of you will know Old Coventrians Bill Whetstone who wrote the following.
NOTE FROM BILL WHETSTONE
Sadly my nephew, Michael Whetstone, passed away last Saturday, aged just 22 years old. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his close family following an 18 month battle against bowel and liver cancer.Mike was passionate about rugby throughout his life, from rough and tumble in the back garden up through the Old Coventrians juniors to become an outstanding centre. He captained the King Henry VIII School Team and played for the OC’s 1st Team, Warwickshire U17s and U18s and the Coventry Bears. He went on to become Captain of Rugby for Kent University, where his team won their Varsity competition 3 years running.
Many of Mike’s rugby peers will remember meeting him on the playing field, and many more will know his father Neil Whetstone who played rugby regularly for OC’s for over 20 years.
Please would you pass on this sad news and details of the memorial service (see below) for those who would like to attend.
Mike was a strong supporter of the Wooden Spoon Charity and asked for donations to this cause rather than flowers.
